FISH SCARCITY AND ITS REMEDY

Of all the scarcity of commodities we experience in our dear country; scarcity of fresh catfish is what I dislike the most. I get frightened whenever I hear of an impending scarcity of fish. Scarcity of petrol; can be endured, because regardless of circumstances, fuel would still come by.

But the scarcity of fish is terrible because, day to day, we process an equivalent of 1,000 kilograms of fresh catfish in the smokehouse and it will take a fish farmer roughly 100 days to produce 1 tonne (1000kg) of fish.

Fish is not something we can just manufacture anytime we want, it takes time and process. To be honest, a lot of people are going into fish smoking/processing now. Forgetting that there’s a widening gap that needs to be filled. A misdirection of importance and knowledge has created a scarcity of fish. This is because a lot of people feel there’s more profit to be made in processing, forgetting that much more could be made in fish farming; if only you stick to the principles that control its processes. Once you have fish, there will always be someone who wants to buy because of this scarcity.

Not so long ago, I had someone who always visited me on the farm to learn about fish processing and the problems I faced as a fish processor. I told him about the scarcity of smoking-size fish, also told him that the ROI in farming them wasn’t so much but because of the high demands of fresh fish, a fish farmer would always make a good profit. I thought I had been able to convince him to go into fish farming so that we could establish a partnership, where he would supply me fresh fish and I’ll buy from him to smoke-dry. Unfortunately and to my surprise, all he wanted to do was exactly what I do, and now he faces the same problems I face, and to date, we both search arduously for fresh fish to buy.

Yesterday I called a lot of people I had bought fish from in the past, to purchase fish but to my dismay, they had gone out of the business. Majorly because they couldn’t get reliable farm hands to assist them on the farm. To most of them, it wasn’t their major source of income. But this is not the same for me, fish smoking is my major source of income and to break even in this, I cannot continue to rely on part-time fish farmers for supplies.

I know you may want to say, “But there’s fish in other states, why not buy from them instead?” Bear in mind that transportation costs – which will inevitably increase production costs, will discourage you because many farmers don’t even have provisions for logistics for their farm produce.

As I type this, I’m already working on solving my problems, because no one is going to solve them for me. And if you want to invest in fish farming, please let me know, with my experience, I can offer you consultancy services. I can tell you how to produce, what to produce, and when to produce.

Fish farming is not hard, all you need is to be present and be involved. A simple breakdown; if you want to raise 5,000 pieces of juvenile in a pond for 100 days;

Cost of renting a pond for 1yr:                                ₦60,000
Security for 1year.                                                       ₦20,000

For a cycle (4months) of smoking size
(Note: 3 cycles can be done in a year)

Pond Clearing, de-mudding & netting:                   ₦30,000
Cost of 5,000 juveniles and quantity of
fish feed that will feed them till harvest
in 4 months:                                                                  ₦1,100,000

Farm hand/ feeder:                                                        ₦20,000
Harvesting/workmanship:                                       ₦20,000
Logistics:                                                                      ₦20,000

                                                                    Total:       ₦1,270,000

You can do this 3 times a year.
Note: you can make up to 75% ROI farming the smoking size of fish for fish smokers in a year.
